思うに尾崎豊というのは、登場した当初から若者のイコンなどではありませんでした。彼は当時の年配者の郷愁をくすぐる、括弧つきの「若者」の象徴、年長者の玩具として生まれ、走り、死んだのです。
朝日新聞的な尾崎豊礼賛をする人は、総じて５０歳以上の人たちです。彼らは、尾崎豊を理解できない現代の若者に対して、「成長のプロセスにおける仮想敵だったはずの親や先生の善意を屈託なく信じている」と驚いたり（香山リカ）、「彼の歌は、内面に深く食い込んできて、いまの若い人にとって触れて欲しくないところに及ぶ」と推測（吉岡忍）したりしています。しかし、尾崎豊ワールドを理解した若者世代など、最初からどこにも存在しませんでした。
現代の若者たちに、自分たちと同じように考え、行動して欲しいのであれば、率直にそう主張するべきです。デモ行進して打倒日帝米帝を叫び、みなで肩を組んで青春の歌を歌い、青臭い議論に花を咲かせて欲しいならそう訴えるべきです。妙なイコンを捏造して、そちらに誘導しようとするのは姑息なことこの上ありません。
また、８０年代に思春期、青春期を過ごしたぼくにすれば、尾崎豊を神格化するのは、あの頃の記憶に土足で踏み入られて、勝手に書きかえられているような気分の悪さを覚えます。自分たちの青春を大事にするのは結構ですが、そのために他の世代の青春を踏みにじるのは、まさに青春の冒涜とは言えますまいか。
